VaccineXpress Travelers' Diarrhea Study
VaccineXpress is seeking healthy men and women to participate in a clinical study
involving the investigational use of a marketed drug for the prevention of travelers'
diarrhea. The study medication will be tested against placebo, or inactive drug.
What is Travelers' Diarrhea (TD)?
Travelers' diarrhea (TD) usually is caused by bacteria-contaminated food and water.
It is the most common illness in travelers to the developing world, affecting about
60% of international travelers to high-risk areas. Sufferers tend to experience 2-4
days of debilitating acute diarrhea, so travel plans can be quite disrupted when
TD occurs. Chronic, or ongoing, post-travel illness can arise as well and may prove to be
of even greater clinical and public health significance. Specifically, persistent diarrhea
has been reported in 2% to 10% of travelers developing diarrhea.
Volunteer Requirements
To be considered for participation in this research study, you must be at least 18 years
old and planning on traveling outside the U.S. (excluding Canada) within the next
42 days. Investigators, including Dr. Roberts, will review additional medical
criteria to determine eligibility for possible inclusion in the study. Your travel must be between 5 and 14 days.
This clinical trial is being conducted at several research centers in the U.S. and will
involve approximately 660 volunteers. Study participation includes at least 2 and possibly
up to 4 clinic visits. You will also be provided with instructions on how to avoid diarrhea
during travel abroad. If you qualify and choose to participate, you will be provided with all
study examinations and study medication at no cost to you and you will be compensated for
your time.
